Dayot Upamecano has admitted he has held talks with ‘certain clubs’ this summer, while remaining coy on his future at RB Leipzig.

The centre-back is one of the most highly-rated defenders in world football right now, his form seeing him reports emerge of interest from Manchester United in recent weeks.

While the Red Devils have made Jadon Sancho their number one transfer target, last weekend’s miserable 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace saw widespread calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to focus on strengthening his defence, with Victor Lindelof, in particular, coming in for criticism.

Upamecano has been tipped as a potential target for the Red Devils, and while he has said he is ‘focused on Leipzig’, his comments don’t exactly sound like a steadfast commitment to the Bundesliga club.

“For the moment I am with Leipzig but it is true that I was able to discuss with certain clubs,” he told Telefoot.

“As I said, for now I am focused on Leipzig and I will continue to play for Leipzig. And then we’ll see.

“You never know what can happen in a football season.”

Manchester United currently have seven senior centre-backs on their books, and while Roma and Inter Milan are interested in signing Chris Smalling, they have yet to receive significant interest in Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo – United so far failing to move on any of their fringe players, while only completing the solitary transfer of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
