Bruno Fernandes is edging closer to signing a new contract at Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What did Romano say about Fernandes' contract situation?

The attacking midfielder's current deal does not expire until 2025, but United are keen to tie him down to an even longer contract.

Romano has claimed that they are confident that Fernandes will commit his future to the club, and that an agreement is almost in place between the two parties.

Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, he said: “There is a lot of optimism. They are working on it since the start of July in a positive and confident atmosphere. They are close, because Bruno wants to stay 100%, and Manchester United, of course, want to keep Bruno. I think he’s really underrated this boy, what a goal he scored against Newcastle, how many goals he’s scored for United also in difficult times.

“Because now everything seems like Disneyland. Now everything is Ronaldo, Pogba, Bruno, Greenwood, Lingard, everyone is doing great, but in difficult moments, Bruno was there. Bruno was calling Cristiano, he’s always thinking for the team, on the pitch and off. And so now his contract is getting really closer, it’s a priority for Manchester United.

“They want Bruno to sign before the end of this year, so they are on it. Meetings, contacts, talks, but negotiations are going on in a really positive atmosphere, and Bruno, as of now, is closer to signing a new contract than Pogba but both are in talks with Man United to sign a new contract.”

How has Fernandes started this season?

The 27-year-old made the perfect start to the season, netting a classy hat-trick in the team's opening day clash with Leeds United.

He failed to get on the scoresheet in the side's next two fixtures, but found the target again this past weekend, thundering home a long-range effort in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle. This means that he already has four goals to his name in as many games in the league this term.

He is more than just a goalscorer, though, and he demonstrated his creative ability in the Champions League on Tuesday night, delivering an exquisite through ball to set up a goal for Cristiano Ronaldo, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were eventually pegged back as they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Young Boys.

Is he still the main man at Man United?

The club have a number of huge stars on their books, and some of those players are at the top of their games right now.

Paul Pogba has come flying out the blocks this season, registering seven assists in four league appearances, while Ronaldo has hit the ground running on his return to England, scoring three times in two matches.

When did Cristiano Ronaldo make his debut for Manchester United?

2002 2003 2005 2007

However, Fernandes has been comfortably the most consistent player at United since he arrived at the club 20 months ago. He has been directly involved in 70 goals in 85 games for the club, which is a scarcely believable record.

If United are going to win some major silverware this season, it seems likely that Fernandes will play a major role in getting them over the line, and that is why he should still be considered one of, if not, the most important player at the club moving forwards.
