Ruben Amorim says he must be cautious with Kobbie Mainoo after the Man Utd midfielder returned to training following injury.

Mainoo has been out since February with a muscle problem but has been back in team training ahead of the Europa League clash with Lyon, and could return to action for the first-leg quarter-final meeting.

But Amorim has urged caution with Mainoo ahead of his return.

On whether he could start against Lyon, Amorim suggested he would not.

“In this moment, we have to be careful with Kobbie,” he said.

“He had some games out so we have to be careful with his fitness. We are really happy to have more options and an option like Kobbie Mainoo with the quality that he has.

“He can play in different positions, he’s already played as a six, as an eight and as a ten so we are really pleased but we have to be careful and we need him fit and fresh.”

Mathjis de Ligt and Toby Collyer remain sidelined for the game through their injury problems, however.

Amorim says it is unclear when de Ligt can return but hopes to have Collyer back in a few weeks.

“Matthijs has a problem with his foot,” Amorim said. “We are trying to assess. We still don’t have the data on when he can return.

“Toby [Collyer] has a small issue in his leg so we hope to have him (back) in a few weeks.”

Mainoo’s return comes at a pivotal point at the season as United looks to end a poor season with silverware by winning the Europa League.

Amorim says he is looking forward to having the 19-year-old back but also says he has lot of improving to do.

“When I see Kobbie, I see a lot of talent,” he said.

“But in the way I see it, I could be wrong, I see some things that Kobbie has to improve. The pace during the game. In build up he needs to improve.

“Near the box, he has a lot of talent and that is why I think he did a very good game in the Europa League in that position.

“When I see Kobbie Mainoo, I don’t see a full player at the moment because he’s 19 and if I say to him ‘no, you are done, you are the final player’ I think I’m not helping Kobbie, that’s all.”
