Manchester United are trying to sign Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich, according to Florian Plettenberg.
United are in talks with the French international defender to agree personal terms.
This potential move follows the impending departure of Harry Maguire to West Ham United. The Hammers have lodged a £30 million offer for the English centre-back, and he is heading out of Old Trafford.
Man Utd coach Erik ten Hag wants enough options and has turned to Pavard—one of Bayern’s better performers last season.
The former VFB Stuttgart man helped his side keep nine clean sheets in 30 Bundesliga appearances last season as Bayern limped to the title. He was arguably their best defender.
The versatile defender has expressed his desire to leave and is open to moving to England. He is in talks with United over a transfer.
Bayern Munich would ideally prefer him to stay in their ranks, especially after Kyle Walker decided to stay at Manchester City.
However, they know they will have to let go of Pavard as he has only one year left on his contract and has refused to renew it beyond 2024.
The 27-year-old wants to embrace a fresh challenge and experience another league.
Pavard is a valuable asset for any club as he can slot in at right-back and centre-back seamlessly, although he has stated that he prefers to operate centrally.
Bayern must sell the Maubeuge-born defender to parties or risk losing him on a free transfer next year.
Manchester City also considered a deal to sign Pavard, but with Walker staying, they will move on to strengthening other parts of their team.
As for Manchester United, signing Pavard will give them depth as they ready themselves for the upcoming campaign.
Ten Hag will ideally want to go into next season with four centre-backs—Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and one more addition. That last name could be Pavard.
