Manchester United legend Eric Cantona believes the proposed European Super League goes against the fans.

Many in the football world are shocked that United, along with eleven other teams, have agreed to form a breakaway league.

United would be joined by five other English teams in a competition that proposes to replace the UEFA Champions League.

The ESL hopes to have 15 founding members (there are 12 at present) who would be a permanent fixture in the competition, along with five places for teams who enter on merit each year.

"I'm going to say something about the European Super League," Cantona said via his Instagram account.

"Since one year we have seen games on TV with the best clubs in the world and the best players in the world and it was so boring. And it's still so boring.

"Because the fans are not there. The fans singing, jumping, supporting their teams.

"So the fans are the most important thing in football, they have to be respected.

"Did these big clubs ask their fans what they thought about this idea? No. Unfortunately and that's a shame."

There was also a caption on his video, which read: 'Power to the fans!'
