Manchester United are willing to wait for as long as it takes to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag has overseen an underwhelming transfer window at Old Trafford and time is running out for the Red Devils to bring in their desired targets.

What is the latest on their midfield search?

De Jong has been linked with a move to the club for what feels like an eternity now but the situation remains a complex one.

The Athletic reported earlier this summer that a deal had been struck with Barcelona for a £63 million transfer of the 25-year-old, but De Jong remains embroiled in a dispute over a wage deferral he took during the pandemic.

There are also reports that the Netherlands international has no interest in leaving Barcelona at all and, if he were to depart, would favour a move to Chelsea.

The Blues have recently entered the race to sign De Jong, who has scored 18 goals during his senior career, but, given his situation at the Camp Nou, it remains to be seen if anyone will be able to complete a deal.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot is closing in on a move to Old Trafford after a fee was agreed with the Serie A giants but personal terms are still outstanding.

What has Jones said on the De Jong situation?

Jones understands that United are still willing to wait to tie up a deal for De Jong this summer, despite the ongoing dispute with Barcelona.

The transfer insider says other options are being considered but that it is clear the former Ajax man remains top of their list.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I spoke to someone on this the other day directly, and I was just like, how long will they wait for this transfer. And he said again: ‘as long as it takes.’ He said there are other names that have been talked about.“

Do United need new midfielders?

While Scott McTominay and Fred have been admirable servants to the club, neither have the star quality or cutting edge required of a midfielder in a club with United’s ambitions.

As per WhoScored, the former completed just 67% of his passes during the 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday and both played zero key passes during their time on the pitch. Adam Lallana and Moises Caicedo completed three each for the opposition.

With Paul Pogba leaving for Juventus, United need to bring in a player who can play progressive passes when they get on the ball, otherwise they will just continue to stagnate.
