Manchester United could grant Cristiano Ronaldo‘s request to leave Old Trafford this summer, believes transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils’ current stance is that the 37-year-old is not for sale, but Jones is refusing to rule an exit out.

What is the latest news involving Ronaldo?

On Monday, The Athletic claimed that Chelsea are considering a move for Ronaldo. This comes after his agent Jorge Mendes and Blues co-owner Todd Boehly held talks about a potential transfer last month.

Since then, a report from The Telegraph has emerged stating that Boehly is set to discuss the matter with Thomas Tuchel before asking the German if the west London club should make a bid for United’s star forward.

Ronaldo’s desire to leave Old Trafford this transfer window is believed to be based on United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

The Manchester club endured a disastrous campaign last season, finishing sixth in the Premier League after accumulating just 58 points.

What has Jones said about Ronaldo’s United future?

According to The Athletic, United are insisting that Ronaldo is not for sale, but Jones thinks that stance could easily change.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “Of course it [Ronaldo leaving] could happen. I mean, look, United are adamant he won’t go, but I’ve reported on so many transfer situations over the years where the player still gets what he wants, so I just refuse to rule this one out.”

Should United sell Ronaldo to Chelsea?

All things considered, they would be crazy to. United fell so far behind the Champions League spots last season; selling their best player to a top-four rival would be an incredibly unproductive move.

Ronaldo is clearly unhappy, though, and Erik ten Hag will probably not want to deal with the problems that could bring, especially so early into his tenure as United boss.

As well as Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Napoli have also been mentioned as potential suitors, so perhaps they could become options for the £27m-rated Portugal international. If not, United would be better off keeping him instead of selling to their Premier League rivals.

As his former Juventus and Real Madrid team-mate Sami Khedira said back in 2020, Ronaldo is an “extraordinary player”. Last term, he scored 24 goals in 38 appearances as he showed no signs of letting up.

To give that up and then hand it to Chelsea would be an absolutely crazy decision.
