Manchester United have been deemed the ‘frontrunners’ in the race for Paris Saint-Germain No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The news comes courtesy of Corriere dello Sport, which adds the Red Devils’ chances of landing the renowned shot-stopper have ‘increased significantly’ over the last 24 hours.

Why are PSG planning to sell Donnarumma this summer?

Given his consistent world-class form between the sticks for the Parisian giants, you might question why on earth they’d be looking to offload him this summer, especially given the role he played in them lifting their maiden Champions League title back in May – during which he kept a clean sheet in the 5-0 triumph – and in them becoming the first French team to win the treble.

However, as is so frequently the case, a breakdown in contract negotiations has prompted the PSG board to consider parting ways with Donnarumma – or else risk losing one of their many valuable assets for nothing in 2026.

With just one year remaining on his current deal, the Italian has been in talks with the club over a renewal for some time now, though an agreement has yet to materialise.

Even though he’s made clear his desire to stay in Paris long-term, the proposed offer by PSG has fallen short of his expectations; they are expecting him to sign on lower terms in order to comply with Luis Campos’ newly-imposed salary cap. Additionally, they’re also in the final stages of signing promising Lille ‘keeper Lucas Chevalier.

United keeping a close eye on Donnarumma’s uncertain situation

United’s pursuit comes after a campaign in which they let in 54 Premier League goals whilst Andre Onana, who’s been ruled out of the pre-season tour with a hamstring injury, added to his catalogue of costly errors week on week.
