Manchester United have identified Chelsea defender Levi Colwill as an alternative target to Everton ace Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.

The Red Devils are expected to sign a marquee centre-back in the upcoming transfer window with Raphael Varane set to leave on a free transfer.

Branthwaite has been identified as the top target, but the Toffees’ current £80 million asking price is more than United are willing to offer (£60m).

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is quite clear the club won’t spend over the odds and Daily Star claim Colwill is one of the back-up transfer options.

United could tempt Chelsea to part ways with Colwill

The 21-year-old was a mainstay in the Blues’ starting line-up during the first half of last season, but his playing time drastically reduced after the turn of the year.

The Blues graduate initially sustained a hamstring issue followed by a toe injury. He was an unused substitute during the final four games of the campaign.

Despite the setback, Colwill remains one of the best young centre-backs in England. United can make a statement by prising him away from the Blues this summer.

Chelsea must balance their books by June 30. They are open to offloading youth graduates as it would guarantee them pure profit.

Transfermarkt values Colwill at £43 million. A proposal in the region of £50m could tempt the Blues into considering his departure.

The Englishman is a left-footed centre-back. He won 65 percent of his duels last season alongside 4.2 recoveries, 2.8 clearances and 2.1 tackles per appearance.

Colwill can also play left back, which would benefit United. The Red Devils are aiming to reinforce the position, and he could provide cover.
