Manchester United have confirmed the signings of Bayern Munich defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

The Old Trafford club have parted with €45m (£38.6m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons for the Dutch centre-back, while the fee for the Moroccan international is €15m (£12.8m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons.

De Ligt joins the Premier League side until 2029 with an option for an extra year while Mazraoui joins until 2028 with the same option.

The pair depart Bavaria after two seasons apiece at the club, in which time De Ligt made 75 appearances, while Mazraoui made 20 fewer. They were both part of the side that won the 2022/23 Bundesliga title.

They become the latest former Ajax players to join United and reunite with Erik ten Hag. Both defenders were part of the side that almost made the Champions League final in 2018/19, a season in which De Ligt became the youngest captain in the Dutch club’s history at just 19.

Having just turned 25, De Ligt will now hope to become a regular in the United backline alongside Lisandro Martínez, a task that should be made easier to begin with due to the foot injury suffered by fellow new boy, Leny Yoro.

Mazraoui is likely to act as competition and cover on both sides of defence, with Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw currently United’s first choice full backs.
