Manchester United could sign Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as soon as today, with reports claiming that a deal is getting closer to completion.
United have been working on a deal to sign the Argentine defender for weeks, with Erik ten Hag keen on a reunion with his former protege.
The 24-year-old also informed the Dutch champions that he was willing to leave this summer, with Premier League his preferred destination.
Fellow Premier League rivals Arsenal were also battling for Martinez’s signature; However, as reported by Mike Verweij, the Copa America winner has declined the chance to join them in favour of a move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils intensified their efforts in the last few days, though they had their previous offer worth around £40 million turned down by the Eredivisie giants.
According to the Daily Mail, Ajax are now ready to accept United’s improved bid, which could be around £46 million.
Reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also reports that Martinez’s move to Old Trafford is imminent after a positive meeting between the two clubs yesterday.
Being a key cog in the defence, Martinez helped Ajax win the Eredivisie titles in the 2020/21 season and the following campaign.
Man Utd have already completed the signing of Tyrell Malacia and secured a deal for Christian Eriksen on a free transfer. They are looking to follow up with the addition of Martinez, who will strengthen the options in the backline.
Frenkie de Jong has been touted as United’s next potential signing, and it has been widely reported that a deal is around the corner.
However, a new obstacle has emerged in the long-running saga as the Dutch midfielder is said to have no intentions of leaving the Catalan giants this summer.
