Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has recalled his first meeting with club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Rangnick was the boss of Schalke when they travelled to Manchester for the Champions League semi-final second leg in 2011, with United easily winning 4-1 thanks to goals from Antonio Valencia, Darren Gibson and an Anderson double, advancing to the final 6-1 on aggregate.

It was in the aftermath of the match that Rangnick properly met and spoke with Ferguson for the first time.

"We spoke after the second leg here," he told United's website. "He invited me back into his office at Old Trafford in the stadium.

"He enjoyed the glass of wine more than I did because we had no chance whatsoever in that game. We missed four or five important first XI players at the time and the mere fact we qualified for the semi-finals with this team against Inter.

"We beat Inter away 2-5 and at home 2-1, no one had expected that at the time. That was the first meeting, the first time I met Sir Alex.

"We met again in 2015 at an event of the Kicker Sport magazine for an award, we had dinner together, and I'm very much looking forward to meeting him in the next couple of weeks.
