Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez is pushing for an exit this summer after informing the Eredivisie giants of his desire to play in the Premier League, reports Sky Sports.

The Argentine defender reportedly had a meeting with Ajax last week to discuss a potential exit while also making his ambitions clear to move to England.

Martinez has emerged as a top target for Manchester United and Arsenal, with the two English clubs battling for his signature.

Although he hasn’t chosen his next destination, Man Utd are apparently leading the race for the talented centre-back.

Erik ten Hag has informed the Red Devils hierarchy to complete the deal sooner, with the Dutch manager looking to reunite with his former protege.

Furthermore, the Dutch gaffer – who got the best out of Martinez at Ajax – has identified the Argentine as the ideal signing to reinforce what turns out to be a substandard backline at Old Trafford.

United are also making significant steps in the pursuit of Martinez after recently raising their offer to around £40m – a fee which is quite closer to Ajax’s valuation.

The 24-year-old has been a staple in defence for Ajax over the last few seasons while developing into one of the promising young talents in Europe.

Martinez, who was part of La Albiceleste’s Copa America winning squad, will be looking to play a prominent role for Argentina in the World Cup later this year; moving to a top club will also enhance his chances of doing so.

It will be interesting to see whether Man Utd can fend off the Gunners, who are by no means giving up their pursuit of Martinez.
