Venezia have gained a reputation for their stylish football kits, and their 2022/23 lineup is no different.

The Italian outfit were relegated back to Serie B for the coming football season, but will play in the second tier in supreme style once again with a fine collection of Kappa manufactured apparel.

They recently launched their third kit, donning a bold, all-over golden colour. And while it might not be to everybody’s taste, it’s absolutely striking and looks incredibly unique in the modern game.

All-over golden shirts are a rarity in football these days.

Sure, everyone loves to make use of gold accents and secondary colours, be it for design or in commemoration of a trophy or an anniversary. But we don’t get enough teams embracing the colour in full anymore.

Venezia have done just that, and it’s truly stunning, leaning fully into the retro design and standing out from every other third shirt on the market right now for 2022/23. Take a look below.

As ever with their kits, the Italian side are leading the way in terms of bridging the gap between football and fashion. The navy collar and button-up is a strong, classy contrast to the striking gold tones, while the Venezia badge and centred text never fail to disappoint.

It’s very easy to get a gold kit wrong, and not so easy to get one right. Especially in modern times, with teams preferring more sleek design choices.

So, in honour of those examples that go against the grain and have seen their bravery rewarded, Venezia being the most recent example, we at GIVEMESPORT have decided to compile a list of the greatest gold kits to don the football pitch.

8. Arsenal away – 2015/16

A polarising shirt, Arsenal’s away strip for 2015/16 could not be criticised for being too mundane. PUMA went all out with the retro design, harking back with the golden colour and the diamond design imprinted within it.

Navy sleeves tied off an exceptional and one of a kind shirt. Certainly loud, but it paid off when Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla were dancing around opponents in it, and Olivier Giroud was scoring for fun.

7. Manchester United third – 2001/02

Now this is something we really don’t see anymore. Not only were United donning a golden third kit, the shirt was fully reversible also, with the same design in white on the other side.

That’s an entirely obsolete technology in today’s game with how thin kits are these days, but Umbro were very much ahead of the curve with this one when it came to kit innovations. It looked incredible, too.

6. Bayern Munich away – 2004/05

Roy Makaay fired Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga crown under the tutelage of Felix Magath in 2004/05, with Michael Ballack also emerging as a star asset.

While everyone remembers Bayern for their iconic red home jerseys, it was their golden away strip that stole the show here. Nothing silly, just a solid base colour and black accents. A real classic.

5. AC Milan third – 2013/14

A rather strange pocket design – and Milan’s general decline – stops this shirt from being truly iconic.

Kaka returning to San Siro in the autumn of his career couldn’t inspire the Rossoneri to avoid sinking further, but at least they looked stylish. The golden third kit was a delight, with red rounding off the black neck and arm accents, and an Italian flag sitting pretty on the chest.

4. Benfica away – 2011/12

One that perhaps flies under the radar, adidas weren’t afraid to tone down the gold with heavy elements of black on Benfica’s away kit in 2011/12. It looks incredibly unique even today, and is only blemished by some heavy sponsoring.

Benfica reached the quarter-final of the Champions League that season, recording two draws against Manchester United in the group stages, which ultimately sent the Red Devils crashing out early.

3. Barcelona away – 2022/23

The newest entry in the list, and for good reason. Amid all of the financial uncertainty surrounding Barcelona, Nike continue to deck them out in incredible kits. The coming season’s away strip is no different.

A more muted tone, the city of Barcelona is bedded into the base design, and the details are rounded off with navy accents, and multi-coloured sleeve cuffs. It’s an instant classic.

2. Barcelona away – 2003/04

Their new away kit, while not officially inspired by it, brings back fond memories of Barcelona’s 2003/04 away jersey, which used a similar colour of gold and was finished off with thin, horizontal navy and red hoops.

Prime Ronaldinho immediately comes to mind, breaking ankles and making defenders look silly wherever he went. Samuel Eto’o alongside him, Xavi and Andres Iniesta behind. You just had to be there.

1.Arsenal away – 2001/02

Turning up to Old Trafford and winning the Premier League draped in a golden kit is an unforgettable memory for Arsenal fans.

It’s a moment that would’ve made any kit iconic, but fortunately it occurred while wearing a beauty. Golden base, navy collar, iconic SEGA sponsor, navy hits in the details and the old Arsenal crest. You could wear this anywhere and pull it off. Timeless, classy and rich in history.
