How much did it cost for each Premier League club to assemble their 2022/23 squad?
In football, generally the more money you spend the more successful you are.
Take Manchester City, for example. They’ve spent the most amount of money over the last decade but have dominated the Premier League in return.
However, money spent doesn’t always directly correlate to trophies won.
This season is proof of that.
Currently, Arsenal sit seven points clear at the top of the table.
And while they’re by no means financially struggling, they’re certainly not the biggest spenders in the league.
That is proved by research from Planet Football who have calculated how much each Premier League club have spent to assemble their current squad.
And while they may sit top of the Premier League right now, Arsenal are fifth in the respective rankings having spent €492.26 million on their squad. The likes of Bukayo Saka coming through the academy and the £6 million purchase of Gabriel Martinelli back in 2019 has helped keep their cost down.
Unsurprisingly, Manchester City lead the way with a squad costing more than €1 billion. The arrivals of Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Riyad Mahrez and Joao Cancelo have been their five costliest additions.
Manchester United have spent the second most to assemble their squad coming in at €873.32 million. Antony, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho cost more than €250m between them.
Chelsea, who look set to spend another €127m on Enzo Fernandez which would take them above Man Utd, come in at third with their squad costing them €778.79m.
Liverpool make up the top four with a squad cost of €709.05m.
Then comes Arsenal. While they may be in fifth, their squad cost more than €200m less than Liverpool’s.
Newcastle (€461.30m), Spurs (€438.85m), West Ham (€375.85m), Leicester (€364.54m) and Aston Villa (€355.81m) make up the top 10.
But what about the other end of the spectrum? Which clubs are competing in the Premier League on relative shoestring budgets?
Well, Brighton have the cheapest squad in the Premier League at just €122.71m. It goes to show the incredible job Graham Potter did on the south coast – one that Roberto De Zerbi is attempting to continue.
Brentford are in 19th having spent just €127.10m on their squad. Again, it shows the amazing work done by manager, Thomas Frank, with them beating Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool this season, while drawing to Chelsea – the clubs with the four most expensive squads!
Fulham are in 18th with a squad costing €133.40m.
