Manchester United have Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on their radar as they look to bring in back-up for David De Gea at Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Erik ten Hag has endured a terrible start to the Premier League season, suffering consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford, but he can still strengthen his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest transfer news from United?

The Red Devils are in need of an extra pair of hands in goal after Dean Henderson was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest for the season.

The Telegraph reported this week that United had now turned to Everton’s veteran shot-stopper Begovic, who they view as the ‘perfect back-up’ to De Gea.

However, they also detail that Frank Lampard is eager to keep the 35-year-old at Goodison Park beyond deadline day, making any move all the more difficult.

Tom Heaton also remains at Old Trafford but, with these latest reports, looks likely to have to settle for the role of third-choice.

What has Jones said on the potential transfer?

Jones understands that Begovic, who has played 403 professional games, is definitely on the club’s radar this summer as they look to replace Henderson.

The transfer insider also emphasised that the Bosnia and Herzegovina international will not be troubling De Gea for his number one spot, and will just be waiting in the wings.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I know Begovic is on their radar. This isn’t United looking for a number one, though, and De Gea’s spot isn’t in danger. So I understand they’re continuing to work on him in terms of his distribution. I mean, De Gea’s had long enough in his career now to work on distribution that if he hasn’t cracked it by now, I don’t think he’s going to crack it in the next couple of weeks.”

Where else will United strengthen?

Ten Hag has a lot of work to do to get his side playing to a level whereby they can trouble the top-four places this season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo eager to leave this summer, a new striker appears to be imperative, with Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha the latest to be linked with a move.

A midfielder also seems to be high on the wishlist. Frenkie de Jong is a long-term target although Chelsea now appear to be leading the race for his signature.
