Rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo‘s demise have been greatly overstated.
The greatest goalscorer in football history hasn’t been at his very best at times in 2022, but when it mattered most, he turned up for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur.
In a game that could decide who finishes in the Premier League top four at the end of the season, Ronaldo scored a breathtaking hat-trick to secure a priceless 3-2 victory for the Red Devils.
Ronaldo’s first goal came early in the first half and it was a stunning long-range strike that no goalkeeper on the planet would have saved.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s second came just before the half-time interval after Spurs had equalised through a Harry Kane penalty.
Ronaldo converted Jadon Sancho‘s cross to put United 2-1 ahead, but the team needed his unquestionable brilliance once again late in the second half.
A Harry Maguire own goal had the game heading to a 2-2 draw, until Ronaldo met one of Alex Telles’ corner in trademark fashion as the clocked ticked over to 81 minutes played.
It was a truly emphatic header and the noise inside Old Trafford was absolutely deafening.
What. A. Player.
Whenever his back is against the wall, Ronaldo produces the goods and that’s his 59th hat-trick for club and country.
Ronaldo’s treble – his second in United’s colours – has also seen him become the greatest goalscorer in football history.
He now sits on 807 goals, two more than the great Josef Bican. That new record is not going to be broken anytime soon, you can be 100% sure of that.
The fact Ronaldo is still scoring Premier League hat-tricks at the age of 37 is quite remarkable and his return to form has come at a very welcome time.
United host Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie next week and that’s a game in which they’ll almost certainly need the best version of Ronaldo.
He has an incredible record against Diego Simeone’s side as well, so don’t rule out hat-trick number 60 becoming reality in due course…
