Manchester United may have been linked with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford because of the 27-year-old’s contract situation at Goodison Park, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Erik ten Hag overhauled his squad during the summer transfer window and spent over £200 million on new recruits, but further investment is already being planned at Old Trafford.

What is the latest on Pickford?

The 45-cap England international, who signed for Everton for £25 million in 2017, has recently been sidelined with a thigh injury picked up in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

However, he made a speedy recovery and was present between the sticks as Frank Lampard’s side beat Southampton 2-1 on the south coast.

According to The Telegraph, United are considering Pickford as a potential replacement for David De Gea at Old Trafford, after the Spaniard entered the final 12 months of his £375,000 per-week contract.

The report adds that there is the option for the deal to be extended by an extra year although it remains to be seen whether that will be taken up.

Journalist Dean Jones has previously informed GIVEMESPORT that Pickford could be the subject of an offer from Ten Hag and co. ‘pretty soon’ after entering the final two years of his £110,000-per-week contract with Everton.

The Red Devils are not alone in monitoring Pickford, however, with Tottenham having previously enquired as to his availability during the summer.

What has O’Rourke said on the situation?

O’Rourke believes that the contract situation of both stars is likely behind speculation linking Pickford as De Gea’s replacement at Old Trafford.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “Jordan Pickford has got just over a year and a bit at Everton left on his contract and still no deal seemingly agreed there, and Manchester United have David De Gea out of contract next summer, so maybe that's where all the talk is coming from.”

Who else have United been linked with?

The Red Devils did sign a goalkeeper in the summer, with Martin Dubravka arriving on a season-long loan from Newcastle United following Dean Henderson’s move to Nottingham Forest.

However, the Slovakian is almost certainly a short-term solution for Ten Hag and a more high-profile name will likely be targeted if they do decide to replace De Gea.

Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak has been identified as a successor to the Spaniard, according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, although Paris Saint-Germain also hold an interest.
