Manchester United target Jan Oblak is ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’ and a move to Old Trafford would be exciting, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Despite spending more than £200million on reinforcements during the summer transfer window, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag will be presented with another opportunity to bolster his squad at the turn of the year.

What’s the latest news involving Oblak?

According to French media outlet Jeunes Footeux, Manchester United have identified Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Oblak as a priority target and are willing to offer a contract worth close to £16million-per-season.

The report suggests ten Hag has not been convinced by David De Gea during the early days of his reign, having taken charge during the summer, but is facing competition from Paris Saint-Germain for the 50-cap Slovenia international’s signature.

There is uncertainty over Oblak’s future at the Wanda Metropolitano as his £253,000-per-week contract is due to expire next summer, meaning January may be the final opportunity for his current employers to cash-in.

The 29-year-old has a £105million release clause written into his current agreement at Atletico, but it is unlikely that his suitors will look to match that figure in January as he may be available as a free agent within a matter of months.

Manchester United are long-term admirers of Oblak and were linked with a swap deal which would have seen De Gea head in the opposite direction last year, but a move failed to materialise.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Oblak?

O’Rourke believes Manchester United will continue to be linked with goalkeepers in the build-up to the transfer window reopening for business at the turn of the year.

The journalist feels Oblak is one of the leading shot-stoppers in the business and would be an impressive signing for the Red Devils.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “These rumours never go away with regards to Manchester United being in the market for a goalkeeper.

“Jan Oblak is one of the best in the world. He has proven that at Atletico Madrid over the years as well.”

Would Oblak be a good signing for Manchester United?

Oblak has made 360 appearances during his time on Atletico’s books and kept 177 clean sheets along the way, which emphasises he is a reliable figure between the sticks.

PSG superstar Lionel Messi has previously described the Slovenian as ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’, so it is clear that he would be a shrewd acquisition from Manchester United’s point of view.

Statistics show that Oblak concedes fewer goals per 90 minutes and has a better clean sheet percentage than De Gea during the early stages of the season, so it could be argued that ten Hag would be securing an upgrade on his current first choice custodian.
