Manchester United picked up their first win in the Premier League this season on the Monday Night Football.
After back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Brentford in their first two outings, the Red Devils rediscovered some form to beat arch enemies Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Jadon Sancho opened the scoring on the night with a brilliant individual goal, one in which he sat down both James Milner and Alisson Becker.
Virgil van Dijk’s defending for the opener was also a little bit suspect…
United then made it 2-0 after the half-time interval through a seemingly reborn Marcus Rashford, the Englishman finishing cooly when put through one-on-one versus Alisson.
It was a top-class performance from Erik ten Hag’s men overall, although the final 10 minutes of proceedings certainly weren’t fun for supporters.
Liverpool pulled a goal back late on when Mohamed Salah headed home from close-range and a comeback certainly looked on the cards.
And in the seconds after Salah made things nervy for United by making it 2-1, Bruno Fernandes desperately tried to halt the visitors’ momentum with some time-wasting tactics.
Fernandes – who was on a yellow card at the time – held onto the ball for as long as he possibly could near David De Gea’s goal.
Unsurprisingly, the Liverpool players were absolutely fuming and to be honest, Fernandes was very lucky to escape without a second booking.
Take a look at the incident…
Is it really any wonder that Fernandes isn’t the most popular of guys among rival supporters?
He just knows how to get under the skin of people.
And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp didn’t look best pleased with Fernandes’ antics when the pair met on the pitch after the full-time whistle had been blown…
Yeah, Jurgen was not a happy man.
Fernandes’ time-wasting tactics also weren’t the only time in which he was guilty of using the dark arts against Liverpool.
The Portugal international was guilty of a horrendous dive inside the penalty area during the second half, which was where he received his yellow card from referee Michael Oliver.
Yeah, that’s just disgraceful.
But overall, it was a top-quality performance from Fernandes, arguably his best since Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the club last summer.
The midfielder was given the captain’s armband in the absence of Harry Maguire and the added responsibility seemed to do him the world of good.
