Manchester United target Daniel Bachmann is the “frontrunner” to become Dean Henderson‘s replacement at Old Trafford, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The Watford goalkeeper has emerged as a shock summer target for the Red Devils, with Erik ten Hag in need of a backup stopper following Henderson’s imminent move to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.

According to Goal, United have approached the Hornets about Bachmann’s services, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the Austria international is in talks over a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Bachmann, who’s made 136 senior appearances in his career, was Watford’s first choice keeper during their promotion-winning campaign in 2020-2021 but he slipped behind Ben Forster in the pecking order last season.

How much did Man Utd pay to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo?

£4.8m £9.3m £12.8m £18.2m

The report states that he could be available for £4m, with Bachmann in line to become David De Dea’s understudy, although that could see him get his first taste of European football in the Europa League.

What’s the latest news involving Bachmann?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “At the moment, I think he’s definitely the frontrunner to become De Gea’s understudy with Henderson going out on a straight loan deal to Nottingham Forest.”

Does Bachmann have any experience of the Premier League?

Despite Foster being Watford’s number one for a large part of last season, the Austrian still got his fair share of opportunities.

Overall, Bachmann made 12 appearances in the top-flight when Foster was out injured at various points of the campaign.

However, besides an opening day victory over Aston Villa, the Hornets didn’t get the results they were hoping for when the 27-year-old was picked from the off.

Following that 3-2 win back in August, Bachmann ended up on the losing side for his next 11 games in the starting line-up, conceding 26 goals in the process.

But unless De Gea is unavailable, he’s unlikely to play in the Premier League, so what’s gone previously with Watford shouldn’t matter too much to those at Old Trafford.
