Manchester United would ‘raise the passion levels’ by luring Everton star Jordan Pickford to Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils may have spent close to £220million in the summer window, but boss Erik ten Hag will get the opportunity welcome fresh reinforcements into his squad at the turn of the year.

What’s the latest news involving Pickford?

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United are considering a move for Pickford as ten Hag is scouring the market for a new first choice goalkeeper.

The report suggests the Red Devils are mulling over whether to extend David De Gea’s stay at Old Trafford after entering the final 12 months of his £375,000-per-week contract, although the agreement could be lengthened by a further year.

Pickford has been on the sidelines since Everton confirmed he suffered a thigh injury during the Merseyside derby with Liverpool earlier this month.

It resulted in the 28-year-old, who has entered the final two years of his £110,000-per-week Goodison Park contract, missing a Premier League fixture for the first time since May.

Tottenham Hotspur also enquired about Pickford’s availability during the summer, but a move away from Merseyside failed to come to fruition.

What has Dean Jones said about Pickford?

Jones has doubts over whether Manchester United fans would be overjoyed if Pickford was tempted to Old Trafford.

However, the journalist believes the shot-stopper’s animated nature could be what the Red Devils need.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It doesn’t seem like he would be that popular a pick.

“But, generally, United have lacked character throughout the squad and Pickford certainly would raise those passion levels.”

Would a deal for Pickford be easy in January?

Pickford has made more than 200 appearances for Everton and it is unlikely that boss Frank Lampard would entertain selling his first choice goalkeeper midway through the season.

The 45-cap England international has not agitated for a move away from his current employers and, with the World Cup getting underway in Qatar in a matter of weeks, that is unlikely to change.

Manchester United could have more luck attempting to prise Pickford away from Everton, who paid a then-club record fee of £30million to sign him from Sunderland five years ago, next summer.

But, with Hugo Lloris entering the final 12 months of his deal at the end of the season, Tottenham could reignite their interest and go toe-to-toe with the Red Devils as well.
