Manchester United's defence of the FA Cup is over after Fulham emerged victorious in a penalty shootout after their fifth round tie had ended 1-1 at Old Trafford.
After a turgid first 45 minutes, in which both sides created very little, it was Fulham who benefitted from a lapse in defensive concentration that is bound to have irked United head coach Ruben Amorim. Rodrigo Muniz flicked on Andreas Pereira's corner, with Calvin Bassey on hand to react quicker than Noussair Mazraoui, glancing the ball beyond the outstretched right hand of Andre Onana to give Fulham the lead.
United made changes in the second half, bringing on the lively Alejandro Garnacho, and his direct approach at least gave Fulham something different to think about.
The scores were levelled by United's consistently high-performing captain, Bruno Fernandes, who ended another week of Roy Keane criticism with a terrific first-time finish that left Bernd Leno grasping at thin air low to his left.
Neither side were able to settle the game in 90 minutes, despite United substitute Chido Obi going close, and Leno and Onana were on hand to make smart saves from Garnacho, Emile Smith Rowe and Ryan Sessegnon in extra-time.
Penalties were required in the end and it was United who were unable to get the job done in front of the Stretford End. The first six were successfully converted before Victor Lindelof was denied by Leno, and after Antonee Robinson coolly rolled his home, Joshua Zirkzee couldn't convert his to send the FA Cup holders crashing out.
