Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek has become familiar with being an unused substitute for the Red Devils in recent months - and Sunday's 5-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool saw more of the same for the Dutch midfielder.

While his teammates were torn to shreds by Jurgen Klopp's men, the 24-year-old - who joined United from Ajax in a £40 million deal last August - could only sit and watch on the Old Trafford sidelines.

It's been a tough 14 months for Van de Beek since arriving in Manchester, having failed to establish himself in the first-team plans of United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Given how poorly the home side's midfield performed against Liverpool, you could hardly blame the player if he felt disheartened by the situation.

To his credit, though, Van de Beek showed both his professionalism and dedication to the United cause by heading out on to the pitch at a deserted Old Trafford following the match to do training sprints.

Footage has emerged on social media of Van de Beek going through his routine in the empty stadium with just a member of the United coaching staff for company - and fans of the club are now calling for him to get a run in the side after being impressed by his commitment.

"Perfect professionalism in the worst of circumstances," stated one reply.

"I feel for the lad. Disgraceful treatment by United," declared a second comment.

"It's actually outrageous he isn’t playing, Fred must be prime Xavi in training," suggested a further response.

Another simply wrote "Free Donny", with a final supporter labelling Solskjaer's refusal to give Van de Beek an opportunity as "pure negligence".

It's hard to argue that Van de Beek isn't deserving of more playing time at the Theatre of Dreams. The only United player to be seen out on the pitch following the disastrous result against Liverpool, it's tough to question his attitude or appetite for the game.

In total, Van de Beek has seen a mere 140 minutes of action for United so far this season. If Red Devils supporters have their way after Sunday's dire performance, however, that lowly figure might soon increase.
