Kevin De Bruyne began his farewell tour by leading Manchester City out in the 196th meeting with their neighbours Manchester United at Old Trafford this afternoon.

Just over 48 hours prior to kickoff, the Belgian playmaker announced his departure after enjoying an unprecedented decade of success with City, and there could have been no better stage to begin that countdown to leaving.

Both clubs have endured challenging seasons, with United seeking to complete their first Premier League double over Manchester City since 2019-20, following their 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in December.

Instead, the points were shared in an uninspiring game that saw neither goalkeeper put under extensive pressure.

This was only the third Manchester derby to finish 0-0 since the start of 2016-17 across all competitions, previously doing so in April 2017 and December 2020, both in the Premier League.

Also concerning for the hosts is the fact that since Rúben Amorim’s first game in charge of United, only Leicester City (12) have failed to score in more Premier League games than the Red Devils (8).

Man Utd player ratings

André Onana: 77%

Forced into making six saves, three of those from shots outside the penalty area. This was an encouraging showing for the much-maligned Andre Onana, who snapped an eight-game streak at home without keeping a clean sheet.

Noussair Mazraoui: 64%

Tucked in as one of United’s three central backs, Mazraoui is no stranger to playing there. The former Ajax and Bayern Munich man put in a shift by winning three tackles, completing a single take-on, and registering two interceptions, showcasing both sides of his game.

Harry Maguire: 61%

He blocked one shot while on the pitch for 58 minutes. Maguire also completed four clearances while successfully initiating one offside trap. He attempted the most long passes by an outfield United player, though completing half of them.

Leny Yoro: 57%

While he produced three interceptions, more than any United player this afternoon, Yoro was dispossessed twice in his own half, which subsequently negated his more positive contributions such as winning possession twice in the middle third and setting a successful offside trap.

Patrick Dorgu: 57%

No one in a red jersey produced more touches in the opposition box than Dorgu, whose attacking endeavours will quickly make him an Old Trafford favourite. However, there’s still an element of carelessness, with the Danish wing-back producing the most unsuccessful touches by a United player (three).

Casemiro: 67%

Casemiro made 11 tackles against City, the most by a United player in a Premier League game since Patrice Evra against Portsmouth in August 2008 (also 11). He also won 12 of his 13 ground duels against City (92%), the highest proportion by any player in the Premier League this season with 12 or more ground duels attempted in a game.

Manuel Ugarte: 59%

Looked to get forward at every opportunity and that resulted in three shots on goal, with none on target, plus missing one big chance. Ugarte’s exuberance also led to him being dribbled past on one occasion.

Diogo Dalot: 67%

Having completed the second-most passes into the final third by a Man Utd player (four), Dalot would nonetheless be frustrated by his open-play delivery, completing only 25% of his attempted crosses.

Alejandro Garnacho: 62%

Had perhaps United’s best opportunity but he was caught in two minds: whether to head or volley. Garnacho nevertheless was active, with the Argentine forward winning possession twice in the attacking third, but he was unable to create a single chance or have a shot on target while completing only half of his attempted take-ons.

Bruno Fernandes: 68%

Unquestionably the best player out there from either team in terms of attacking. Fernandes completed 14 passes into the final third more than any other United player and created three goalscoring opportunities, with one being considered a “big chance”.

Rasmus Højlund: 43%

Often cut a lonely figure leading Man Utd’s attack, with this being another game to forget in Rasmus Højlund’s frustrating Old Trafford career. He was not the beneficiary of any chances, and one touch in the opposition box plus a single lay-off pass completed summed up his afternoon’s efforts.

Man City player ratings

Ederson: 72%

United’s paucity in attack meant Ederson was forced into making two saves, both coming inside the penalty area. Furthermore, he completed three long passes (60%), so wasn’t occasionally putting his team on the back foot by regularly ceding possession back to the hosts.

Nico O’Reilly: 60%

It was an encouraging first Manchester derby start for Nico O’Reilly—the fourth-youngest defender to do so for City against United in the Premier League—who created one chance while registering the most touches in United’s penalty area (five) by any City player.

Josko Gvardiol: 64%

Playing in a more familiar centre-back role, Gvardiol looked comfortable in possession, registering an impressive 93.9% retention rate. He also chipped in with eight clearances, winning all of his ground duels and winning possession of the ball on three occasions in the middle third.

Rúben Dias: 66%

Received the earliest card in a Premier League Manchester derby on record since 2006/07 after committing a tactical foul in the opening 40 seconds. He was on his best behaviour for the remainder of the game and even completed a team-high nine passes into the final third. Dias also won four aerial duels (100%), more than any other City player, while registering one interception inside the box.

Matheus Nunes: 61%

Once again stationed at full-back, though Nunes is becoming increasingly comfortable in this role, having won possession three times in the defensive third. He was the only City player to pull off an offside trap successfully. However, being dispossessed twice in his own half negated those positive contributions.

Mateo Kovacic: 72%

Operating as a single pivot in City’s 4-1-3-2 shape, Kovacic didn’t put a single foot wrong. He won possession on five occasions and seven of his 10 duels. Furthermore, no City player initiated more successful passes into the penalty area (two).

Ilkay Gündogan: 59%

Won possession twice in the attacking third, most by any City player, but this was far from a vintage Gundogan performance. The German midfielder was dribbled past once and won a single tackle, being taken off in the 74th minute.

Omar Marmoush: 51%

Asked to lead the line in Erling Haaland’s absence, the Egyptian forward registered three shots on target (from four attempts) but returned with a 0.15 xG score. He enjoyed the second most touches inside the opposition box by a City player (four).

Kevin De Bruyne: 53%

Slotted in the deep-lying playmaker role he has come to own, but this was not a vintage De Bruyne performance. He had two tame shots on target, did not create a single chance, completed only 20 of 29 passes, and none of his four crosses were characteristic of the Belgian maestro.

Bernardo Silva: 70%

Today we got feisty Silva, with the Portuguese international completing a team-high three tackles (100%), as well as winning 11 duels—none of his teammates reached double figures. Silva also completed a single take-on and was never dribbled past.

Phil Foden: 47%

He normally excels in this fixture, having previously netted six goals past Man Utd in 14 appearances, but this was yet another disappointing outing for the reigning player of the year. Foden attempted two shots on goal, and neither were on target, while he missed one big chance. Furthermore, his two attempted take-ons were unsuccessful.

How do Squawka player ratings work?

Squawka’s new player rating system is wholly stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.

We tailored each score to the players’ respective positions using extensive research and expertise. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box, and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes, etc.
