Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has alleged Manchester United only sealed Cristiano Ronaldo's return to the club as they could not stand the thought of him joining arch-rivals Manchester City.

Ronaldo left Serie A giants Juventus in favour of heading back to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.

What's the latest news involving Ronaldo?

Ronaldo appeared to be close to making a return to the Premier League as the closure of the summer window loomed, with City leading the race for his signature.

However, it was then revealed that the Glazer family, who own United, were tempted to hijack the move.

Following speculation over the Portugal international's future, Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri confirmed Ronaldo had asked to leave his then-employers.

Reports went on to suggest that United looked to negotiate a deal which would take the 36-year-old to Old Trafford after it appeared he was on his way to cross-city rivals City.

Following the completion of his £13million switch, Ronaldo revealed former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson played a key role in him deciding to return to familiar surroundings.

What has Michael Bridge said about Ronaldo's move?

Bridge believes suggestions that United only wanted to seal Ronaldo's return after City had made their move could be true.

He feels Ronaldo is now coming under fire after an impressive start to his second stint with the Red Devils.

Bridge told GIVEMESPORT: "It was an unbelievable start for Ronaldo in the first few weeks.

"But now people are saying he has upset the applecart and they only signed him to stop him going to Manchester City.

"There could actually be some truth in that."

How has Ronaldo performed so far this season?

Ronaldo chalked up his 300th United appearance in midweek, with him scoring a late winner in the comeback Champions League win over Italian side Atalanta.

That took his tally up to six goals since his return to Old Trafford.

However, his Premier League goals have dried up in recent weeks and he has not scored in the competition since netting at West Ham United last month.

His lack of goals has coincided with a drop in form from his club, with United failing to win a top flight fixture since overcoming the Hammers at the London Stadium.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leapt to Ronaldo's defence last weekend after he was criticised following the 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City.
