Reports on Monday revealed that Manchester United and Real Madrid had reached a £42m agreement for the signing of defender Raphael Varane. However, according to recent reports in Spain, Florentino Perez’s Los Blancos wanted a lot more than that.

Although a deal for Varane has yet to be completely finalised, with talks of a medical expected to take place in the coming days (Di Marzio), seeing the Frenchman officially unveiled as a Manchester United player is now a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’.

Subject to a successful medical, when Varane, 28, is confirmed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s third summer signing, it will signal an end to his decade long spell in Madrid.

Having joined all the way back in 2011 from French side RC Lens for a very modest fee of just £9m, Varane has gone to become one of football’s most decorated stars.

After featuring in 360 matches, in all competitions, for Real Madrid, the 2018 World Cup winner has had a huge hand in the La Liga giants lifting 18 major trophies, including a whopping four Champions Leagues.

However, with his contract with Real Madrid set to expire next summer and with the player understood to be keen on a new challenge, all the pressure was on president Perez to find a quick solution or risk losing the star for free in 12-months time.

Although several clubs, including Paris-Saint Germain and Chelsea, were rumoured to be keen, it has been Manchester United who has come out of the bidding war victorious.

Reports in Spain from popular outlet AS have now revealed just how much money the Red Devils have managed to save on the world-class defender.

AS’ latest report states that Real Madrid was demanding €70m (£60m) in exchange for Varane, however, following an agreement of just £42m (Guardian), the Red Devils’ recruitment team, led by new football director John Murtough, have managed to save themselves a whopping £18m.

Not bad – not bad, at all.
