Manchester United‘s interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will sign off his time in charge of the Red Devils on Sunday by seeking a second win over Leicester City in his brief tenure.
Man United (4-3-3): Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Ugarte, Casemiro, Fernandes; Diallo, Rashford, Hojlund
Leicester (4-2-3-1): Hermansen; Pereira, Faes, Vestergaard, Kristiansen; Ndidi, Winks; Fatawu, Buonanotte, Mavididi; Vardy
The Dutchman will step aside for new boss Rúben Amorim during the international window as the latest Old Trafford management era begins, but before that the Foxes are in town as United aim to climb into the top half of the Premier League standings (kick-off 14.00).
One United player meriting a chance to impress against the Foxes will be Amad Diallo following his midweek brace saw off PAOK in the Europa League.
The 22-year-old Ivorian scored twice in the second half to ensure van Nistelrooy has gone three games unbeaten as interim boss.
It was Diallo’s first start since the draw in Porto early last month and he’ll be hoping to retain his place after providing those match-winning interventions against the Greek champions.
United and van Nistelrooy will be aiming to draw on the memory of the recent Carabao Cup win over Sunday’s opponents. In that game, the Red Devils scored four times in the first half as they eventually ran out 5-2 winners.
The three-game spell under former United striker van Nistelrooy is arguably the best sequence that the Old Trafford side have pieced together so far this season, even allowing for a pair of unbeaten stretches that lasted four games under the now dispatched Erik ten Hag.
The win over PAOK saw a first clean sheet for United in six attempts, but they’ll be wary of a Leicester side that possesses plenty of attacking zest.
Van Nistelrooy, despite having had a taste of management on his own steam at PSV Eindhoven, has spoken of his desire to remain involved at the Red Devils when Amorim takes over.
He will be keen to deliver three more points for the Portuguese before he arrives next week.
Getting the likes of Diallo and Mason Mount, who replaced him late on in Thursday’s win, involved in winning performances will surely aid his cause, as would another five-goal salvo from his charges against Leicester.
Matchwinner Diallo was replaced by Mount with less than 10 minutes to play on Thursday, the former seemingly having taken a knock on his foot.
Diallo looked to be showing no ill-effects after the final whistle when he was back on the pitch bare-footed and he would appear to be in contention for Sunday.
Mount’s late cameo was his first appearance since the 3-0 home loss against Tottenham in September and he may once more be settling for a place amongst the replacements against Leicester.
Van Nistelrooy still has plenty of headaches. Kobbie Mainoo is likely to remain sidelined along with Harry Maguire, with both left out of the latest England squad for the upcoming international break.
Fellow defenders Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro are still on the injured list, at least until after the international break.
Matthijs de Ligt was on the bench on Thursday evening but may be restored to the backline here, with veteran Jonny Evans likely to step aside. Otherwise, van Nistelrooy fielded a near full-strength line-up in midweek and will likely stick closely to that winning formula.
Leicester have got to make do without striker Patson Daka once more, while Steve Cooper will have to wait on the fitness of Harry Choudhury and Victor Kristiansen.
The EFL Cup defeat is one of three games in a row in which City have not claimed a win, with only a 94th-minute Jordan Ayew goal rescuing a point at Ipswich last time as they sidestepped three straight losses.
