Manchester United are unwilling to pay £20million for Atletico Madrid ace Kieran Trippier

According to The Express, Manchester United are unwilling to make a bid of £20million for Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier.

The 30-year-old is being seen as a key capture as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks to reinforce his squad ahead of the new season. The Norwegian is keen to bring in competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and appears to have earmarked Trippier to be his man.

Atletico are however keen to keep hold of their player and United could now be forced to look elsewhere. Norwich City’s Max Aarons is one potential alternative.

A move for the Englishman was proving complicated due to Atletico’s demand that the player’s €40million release clause be met. It is admittedly a rather steep value for a player who will turn 31 next season.

Trippier for his part is keen to move to Manchester. The full-back is worried that he could be priced out of a move and this remains a distinct possibility now. The 30-year-old played a key role for Atletico as they won the La Liga title.

He was eventually named in the La Liga team of the year. Trippier was subsequently selected for the England squad for the Euros.

Bang for the buck?

United’s initial bids were rejected last week, with Atletico seeking more for their star man. While there is no argument that Trippier will offer the Red Devils squad something different, it makes little sense for us to overpay for a man who has little to no sell-on value.

The Red Devils are better served to make a move for Aarons, who can in all likelihood emerge as an option for years to come. Missing out on Trippier is not the end of the world and not be treated as such.

United’s stance will come as a boost for French giants Paris Saint-Germain, who are also interested in Trippier. They are short in the position following Alessandro Florenzi’s return to AS Roma. (h/t The Sun)
