Manchester United on alert regarding Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski

According to The Express, Manchester United and Chelsea are on high alert regarding Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish international is amongst the finest strikers of his generation and has been an overwhelming force for the better part of a decade. Having won seven Bundesliga titles on the trot, he is now seeking a new challenge.

There is little left for the 32-year-old to achieve at the Allianz Arena. With him still staying sharp, he will be a major asset to just about any team in Europe.

If Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is to be believed, they have no intention of selling the Polish international. Given how hard pressed they would be to replace him, one can understand.

Despite extending Edinson Cavani’s contract, United could do with another striker. In Lewandowski, they would be getting a world-class option who is still at the very top of his game.

Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen.

A league of his own!

The likes of Erling Haaland and Andre Silva have both caught United’s attention with their prolific season in the Bundesliga. Lewandowski has outperformed them both and is miles ahead of them in the race for the golden boot. (h/t BBC)

In fact, Lewandowski scored his 40th goal of the campaign in just his 28th game yesterday night against SC Freiburg. The strike saw him equal German legend Gerd Mueller’s 49-year-old Bundesliga record for the most goals scored in a single campaign. (h/t BBC)

Despite being 32, Lewandowski has lost little of his ability to find the back of the net. In fact, he averages a goal every 58 minutes this season in the German top flight.

United came very close to landing the Polish hitman when he was still with Borussia Dortmund in 2012. Ferguson personally reached out to the player in an effort to arrange the transfer. Lewandowski for his part was ready to move but later chose to stay put.

Nine years on, he remains just as much in demand. Securing his signature would be nothing short of a coup for United.
