As the Premier League season kicks off, Manchester United faces a notable dilemma with its defensive lineup—specifically at the left-back position. With key players sidelined, the club is reportedly setting its sights on Miguel Gutierrez, the dynamic Girona left-back, to fill this urgent gap.
The start of the season has seen Manchester United grappling with an injury crisis. Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are out of action, with Shaw expected to return only after the first international break of the season. Given Shaw’s frequent injuries, United’s manager, Erik Ten Hag, is perhaps understandably looking for a reliable addition to his squad.

Miguel Gutierrez has recently emerged as a prime target for United’s scouts according to reports in Spain. Last season, Gutierrez was instrumental in Girona’s historic qualification for the Champions League, thanks to a standout campaign in Spain’s La Liga. His prowess both defensively and offensively makes him a valuable asset. Renowned for his attacking capabilities and solid defence, Gutierrez also possesses a notable speed in transition, making him a well-rounded candidate for the Premier League’s rigorous demands.
Reports suggest that several top European clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal, are also keen on securing his services, which could complicate United’s pursuit. Yet, the allure of Premier League football and the prospect of regular first-team action might tip the scales in favour of a move to Manchester.
Despite a reasonably successful transfer window, where talents like Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were brought in, the absence of a naturally left-sided defender remains a glaring issue. Real Madrid holds a buy-back clause on Gutierrez, which presents a potential hurdle. However, United’s resolve to bolster their squad is evident, and adding Gutierrez could provide the stability and flair needed on the flank.
As the transfer window draws to a close, Manchester United may still be active in the market, with potential high-profile departures and arrivals. Securing a player of Gutierrez’s calibre could be a game-changer for Ten Hag’s side, offering tactical flexibility and addressing a critical vulnerability in their lineup.
The possibility of Manchester United signing Miguel Gutierrez is one that carries significant weight and potential. We’ve seen the holes left by injuries and inconsistent performances on the left side their defence, and the addition of a player like Gutierrez could be just what they need to shore up this weak spot.
Miguel Gutierrez represents more than just a temporary patch; he’s a long-term investment. His standout performances in La Liga have showcased his capability to compete at the highest levels—a trait Manchester United desperately need. His defensive acumen combined with his offensive capabilities means he could contribute both at the back and in forward pushes, potentially transforming their flank entirely.
However, there’s a note of caution amidst the excitement. The presence of a buy-back clause by Real Madrid might complicate things, and the interest from other top clubs means United are not the only ones eyeing his talent. Manchester United must act decisively if they truly believe Gutierrez is the key to solidifying their defence.
