Manchester United’s position regarding the potential signing of Victor Osimhen from Napoli this summer. It is a pursuit that encapsulates the fine margins and financial balancing acts now facing Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s footballing operation at Old Trafford.
In short, United remain interested, but significant concerns linger over whether the deal makes economic sense.
There is no doubt about the admiration United hold for Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray, is still firmly on their radar as they seek to bolster their attacking options. As reported by TBR Football, “Man United have been scouting Osimhen for some time now.”

Under contract at Napoli until 2026, Osimhen carries a release clause just over £60 million. Napoli would ideally see that figure met but, as TBR note, “few clubs in Europe would be willing to pay that figure in one lump sum.” A willingness to negotiate on payment structures opens the door slightly, but it does not dispel United’s internal doubts.
According to TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey, “United are concerned about such a significant lay-out on one player this summer, like a deal for Osimhen would demand.” After years of erratic spending, there is a clear drive to be more responsible.
Napoli are, for their part, motivated sellers. TBR report that “Napoli want Osimhen to leave this summer and realise that a deal is likely needed to be brokered,” especially with the looming threat of losing him for free in 2026 if no agreement is reached.
Indeed, Osimhen’s representatives have reminded Napoli of this looming risk, heightening the Italian club’s sense of urgency.
There remains the possibility that Rasmus Hojlund, who still holds ‘firm interest’ from Napoli, could become part of a complex deal, although no formal plans have been put forward yet.

There is also clarity now over Osimhen’s wage expectations. Despite previous speculation, TBR’s sources insist that Osimhen “is not demanding over £400k-a-week to come to the Premier League.” While he would naturally expect a competitive package, there appears to be flexibility rather than extravagance in the discussions.

Nevertheless, United are wary of competition. While Osimhen is keen on a move to England, interest remains strong across Europe, and the Saudi Pro League, flush with cash and intent on raising its profile, is pushing hard.
Meanwhile, United continue to explore alternatives. Matheus Cunha, Liam Delap, and Jean-Philippe Mateta are all names under active consideration, showing that the club are wisely keeping multiple avenues open.

This summer, perhaps more than any other, will test the new regime’s transfer discipline. Osimhen is an outstanding talent. But after a series of high-profile flops, Ratcliffe’s project depends on getting value as much as glamour.
Osimhen remains a prime target, but United’s hesitation suggests a club more cautious, more strategic — and perhaps, finally, ready to operate with the rigour demanded at the top level.
If you’re a Manchester United fan, it’s hard not to get a little excited at the thought of Victor Osimhen leading the line next season. Finally, a proper No9 with physicality, pace, and ruthless finishing — exactly what they’ve missed since prime-era Robin van Persie.
Sure, there’s always the concern about big transfer fees, but this is Victor Osimhen. You don’t get a chance to sign someone of his calibre every summer. His movement off the ball, his ability to stretch defences, his knack for scoring in big matches — Osimhen could transform this team and give them a real focal point in attack again.
There’s a lot of talk about learning from past mistakes, and rightly so. But sometimes you have to be bold. This isn’t just another expensive signing for the sake of it. It’s about bringing in a player who fits the ethos of the rebuild and gives United a genuine cutting edge.
