Eric Bailly to reject new Manchester United contract

According to ESPN, Manchester United star Eric Bailly is set to reject a new contract. He is keen to move in the summer following what has been a frustrating season at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old was notably Jose Mourinho’s first signing as United boss. A dependable player in his own right, injuries have largely limited his impact in red.

With his contract set to expire next year, a decision will need to be made on his future. United cannot afford to have the Ivorian leave for free next year and may well have to find buyers for this off-season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred to use Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof as his first-choice centre-back pairing wherever possible. This has left Bailly in limbo even when fit.

The Ivorian has been left frustrated by the lack of opportunities afforded to him and appears to be ready to call time on his stint with the club.

Bailly has made only 15 appearances for United across all competitions this season. To make things worse, he has been unavailable for our last three games after testing positive for COVID-19. He may however be ready in time to face Granada at Old Trafford this week.

A new beginning!

The defender is aware that he is behind Maguire and Lindelof in the pecking order. With the club also looking for another defender, his prospects in the coming season aren’t very promising.

Currently entering his prime, it is a waste of his talent to be left on the bench. Bailly’s intention to leave is understandable given where he is in his career.

According to the report, a number of clubs from Italy and Spain are interested in securing Bailly’s services. Whether United can recoup the £30million paid for him in 2016 remains to be seen.

Solskjaer is a good manager but he has shown himself to be unable to get the best out of some players. Jesse Lingard is a prime example of that.

The Englishman’s success elsewhere should give Bailly more hope that he could rekindle his career elsewhere.
