Nemanja Matic believes a strong personality is needed to win the Europa League

According to the club’s official site, Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic believes mentality is the key as we attempt to win the Europa League.

United are through to the semifinals after overcoming a dogged FC Copenhagen side. The Serbian played a key role as he came off the bench for the ineffectual Fred.

Matic helped us win the midfield battle and ensured he stayed as a pivot for our attacking talents to thrive.

“The most important [thing] now is to be mentally ready.”

It is especially important given United’s hectic campaign. The semi-final clash will be the club’s 61st game of the campaign. Fatigue remains a factor, with a number of players slagging off in the second half against Copenhagen.

Matic believes the team’s mental strength should propel them forward even as they tire physically.

“I think that mental point will decide the semi-final – and final, of course.”

The mentality was on show yesterday as United kept their heads despite Copenhagen’s staggering defence. The Red Devils went close on multiple occasions but could not breach the Danish defence.

They ultimately punched through after Anthony Martial was brought down fora penalty in extra time. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and dispatched the ball with ease.

Matic endured a difficult start to the season. He has since improved and is today one of our best-performing players. This saw him get rewarded with a new contract that extends his stay until 2023.

The 32-year-old represented Benfica in the 2013 UEFA Cup final. Hopefully, he can go one better this time with United.
