Manchester United star Marcus Rashford pleased with community response against child hunger

According to the BBC, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has never felt prouder to call himself British.

This comes following overwhelming community support after MPs rejected a bid to extend free school meals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I couldn’t be more proud to call myself British tonight.”

It would have left a largely vulnerable section of the society helpless in what is one of the worst events in recent history. Rather than accept their fate, Rashford vowed to fight back. This in turn has led to many around the country follow in his footsteps.

Rashford was at the heart of a campaign earlier this year that saw the government change its policy to allow 1.3million children in England claim free school meal vouchers during the summer holidays.

But they have ruled out extending free meals nationwide beyond term time. The reason according to them is that they’ve given councils £63m for families facing financial difficulties due to pandemic restrictions, as well as increasing welfare support by £9.3bn.

While the government may not have been of any help in this case, local communities have stepped up.

For example, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said the council’s decision to back the campaign would provide meals for 19,800 children in the city.

Organizations and individuals have come forward in an effort to do what they can to bridge the gap left by the officials.

Rashford took to Twitter to praise these selfless people who have offered a hand of help even while facing unsure times themselves.

It is a long struggle before we can completely abolish child hunger. Rashford appears to be prepared to go the distance. From the looks of it, he will not be fighting the war alone.

The English international’s efforts have drawn support even across club lines. Rashford truly is a hero both on and off the field.
