Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly form an excellent defensive duo for Manchester United

According to MEN, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has opened up on his partnership with Eric Bailly at the heart of the defence.

Both players have developed a good understanding of each other’s game. The duo has looked formidable and has held its own so far.

A major drawback to Maguire’s game has been his lack of pace. With Bailly alongside him, the skipper can now play to his strengths without the worry of getting caught out.

“He’s back and playing really well since he’s been free of injury and we have formed a really good partnership.”

The duo has started in five of United’s last seven games in all competitions. During this time, they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just thrice.

“It’s a nice partnership that has blossomed over the last month.”

The Ivorian is now enjoying his best run of games since his debut season at the club. While his ability was never in doubt, injuries had forced him largely to the sidelines. With Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe also available, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not short of choices at centre-back.

Rising to the challenge!

Maguire believes this collective strength is key to the good form he and Bailly have been exhibiting. With competition for places high, the duo clearly have stepped up their game.

“There’s Victor as well – and Axel Tuanzebe is pushing as well. That can only push you to perform even betteer.”

Both players have not been afraid to put in the basics and it shows. Aerially dominant and with a no-nonsese attitude, defending comes first for the duo.

“As a centre back the first thing you have to do is really love defending.”

At 26 and 27 respectively, Bailly and Maguire are in the prime of their career. This could potentially be the start of a partnership that could form the bedrock of our backline for years to come.

This will be put to the test when they take on Liverpool later tonight at Anfield. Keeping Jurgen Klopp’s front three quiet will go a long way in showing that they are the real deal.

Bringing in a dependable player to partner Maguire was on the club’s agenda last summer. However, as things stand, that player was already amongst them.

As long as Bailly can stay fit, United could very well have a formidable defensive duo on their hands. How they continue to develop remains to be seen.
