Jesse Lingard informs Solskajer that he is keen to stay at Manchester United

According to The Sun, Jesse Lingard has made it clear to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he wants to stay at Manchester United beyond this summer.

The 28-year-old, a key player under both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho has been anything but under Solskjaer. With opportunities under the Norwegian at a premium, Lingard made the decision to move to West Ham United on loan last January – a decision that has paid off handsomely.

He averaged close to a goal contribution per game and took the Hammers to the verge of Champions League qualification. Lingard was amongst the best players in the Premier League in the latter half of the 2020/21 campaign. He won the Premier League Player of the Month and the Goal of the Month awards for April.

West Ham are understandably keen to continue the association. While the player has not ruled out the possibility, he appears keen to stay put in Manchester. The Englishman believes it was necessary for him to leave United to gain regular first-team football. Now that he has shown what he can do, Lingard is keen to reignite his career as a Red Devil.

While his intentions may be true, it is unlikely that Lingard will play a starring role at United. This position could be further worsened if the club brings in a host of reinforcements this summer.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride?

The 28-year-old has a year to go on his current deal with United. While he would offer excellent strength in depth, it would appear unlikely that he would be given a starring role at United.

He is in the prime of his career and can do better than to remain as a backup player at United. Lingard shares a good relationship with David Moyes and could become a key star at West Ham. What course he eventually decides to take remains to be seen.

Lingard has made 210 appearances for United, scoring 33 goals and making 20 assists. His standout moment will remain the extra-time strike that won United the FA Cup in 2016 against Crystal Palace at Wembley.
