According to sports news outlet BT Sport, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has been christened the 2021 Postcode Hero for his valiant efforts in tackling child food poverty.
The 23-year-old has been the face of football off the field over the course of a year due to his efforts to ensure no kid in the United Kingdom went hungry.
The Postcode Hero award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to society for their charitable and campaigning work. It is fair to say that Rashford is a worthy winner of the honour.
Staying true to his character, Rashford admitted he was honoured at being awarded the accolade. While recognition is well and good, he has not taken his eyes off the ball.
“It’s an honour to be named this year’s Postcode Hero but the most important thing to me is the difference these funds will make to families that, for whatever reason or circumstance, are struggling to feed their children.”
The England international celebrated the award by presenting a cheque for £250,000, raised by People’s Postcode Lottery players, to the Trussell Trust and FareShare.
The Trust provides emergency food and support to the people suffering from poverty. Their campaign is focussed on ending the need for food banks in the UK. A noble thought that will hopefully come true one day.
FareShare works with the food industry to distribute surplus supplies to 11,000 charities and groups across the United Kingdom. This includes school breakfast clubs, homeless shelters, older people’s lunch clubs and community cafes.
People’s Postcode Lottery managing director, Clara Govier was also full of praise for Rashford and his efforts.
“Marcus is a passionate and highly effective campaigner against food poverty in the UK and we are delighted to present him with this year’s Postcode Hero award in recognition of that work.”
Previous recipients include George and Amal Clooney and Sir David Attenborough. Whether it be on or off the field, Rashford sure finds himself in elite company.
