Edinson Cavani and Unai Emery will be on opposite teams when Manchester United take on Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
The Uruguayan however was full of praise for the Spanish coach, who is chasing his fourth win in the competition. Speaking to UEFA’s official website, Cavani gave a glowing assessment of the man who managed him earlier at Paris Saint-Germain.
Cavani praised Emery’s attention to detail and the rigorous preparation he makes. With a trophy on the line, there is little chance of him letting up on that front.
“I really liked his way of working; he is a coach who’s going to work a lot and prepare really well for the Europa League final. He’s definitely going to analyse it very well.”
Cavani has suggested that there is no room for error and United will need to be at their best to win on the night. An accomplished manager, this will be Emery’s fifth final with three different teams.
“You have to play a perfect match. I know that Unai is like that: he’s a hard-working coach. And that is why he has won titles, trophies wherever he’s worked.”
In contrast, this is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first major final with United. The Norwegian has faced off against the Spaniard five times, four of which have come with him in charge of Manchester United.
Solskjaer has won two of those meetings, with Emery prevailing just once. Hopefully, he will once again have the Spaniard’s number at Gdansk.
Villarreal go into the game with more than enough motivation to get one over United. The Yellow Submarine finished a disappointing seventh in La Liga, failing to even qualify for next season’s Europa League.
A win against us will however elevate them to the Champions League next season and all the riches that come with it. United will do well to be in top form on the night.
