Manchester United have slapped a whopping £50 million price tag on out-of-favour defender Harry Maguire, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Off the back of a disappointing 2022/23 campaign with the Red Devils where he started just 16 games across all competitions, Maguire has been heavily touted for an Old Trafford exit this summer.

He only started eight Premier League games last term, with Erik ten Hag preferring a centre-back pairing of Raphael Varance and Lisandro Martinez.

If one of the preferred duo was sidelined, Ten Hag trusted Luke Shaw to feature in an unorthodox left centre-half role, while Victor Lindelof was also ahead of Maguire in the pecking order.

Maguire arrived at the Theatre of Dreams from Leicester City in a world record deal for a defender worth £80m and was immediately tagged as the future of Man United’s defence.

However, four years down the line, he has lost his starting berth at the club, but the asking price suggests Man United are not actively looking for buyers for the 30-year-old.

Man United want at least £50m for Maguire, who has two years left on his current deal, but their demands will most likely ward off any potential suitors.

Despite Maguire’s ill fortunes at Old Trafford, the former Leicester man has remained a key figure for the England national team under Gareth Southgate.

However, the England manager has warned that he could lose his spot without regular playing time at club level, and Maguire is open to departing Man United to salvage his career.

While potential suitors are sure to baulk at Maguire’s valuation, his salary could also be problematic, with the defender set for a significant pay rise after Man United qualified for the Champions League.

Maguire is reportedly preparing for crunch talks with Ten Hag over his long-term future at the club, but if both parties do not see eye to eye, Man United could be forced to lower their unrealistic demands.
