Manchester United chiefs are ready to sanction a mega bid for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, according to the Daily Star.

The Premier League giants hold a long-standing interest in the England captain, who has consistently been linked with a move away from north London.

United are in the market for a new striker, having relied solely on academy graduate Marcus Rashford to deliver the goods this season.

The 25-year-old has lived up to expectations, leading the line with aplomb after scoring 27 times and assisting a further nine in 44 appearances across all competitions.

However, a centre-forward has always been on manager Erik ten Hag’s wishlist and United CEO Richard Arnold has sanctioned a potential £80 million deal for the striker.

Although they are short of Tottenham’s valuation, with Spurs chief Daniel Levy demanding £100m up front to sell the 29-year-old to their rivals, there is a growing feeling that a deal could be reached, especially in the wake of Antonio Conte’s departure.

Knowing they will face competition from other potential suitors, including Chelsea and Bayern Munich, United are looking to get ahead in the race to sign the Englishman and are planning to open talks in the coming weeks rather than wait until the summer.

Kane is approaching the latter stages of his career, and his current deal with Spurs runs out in the summer of 2024.

But the striker has shown no willingness to commit his long-term future to the Lilywhites, and a summer departure could appeal to him.

The Spurs academy graduate, who recently became England’s all-time highest goalscorer has proven a reliable goal source time and again during his career but silverware has proven elusive.

United could offer Kane a chance at winning trophies at Old Trafford, especially under the tutelage of Ten Hag, who has guided the Red Devils to Carabao Cup success in his debut campaign.

The Dutch tactician believes signing a striker of Kane’s calibre would transform his side into genuine title contenders next season, prompting United to fast-track his transfer to beat the competition to his signature.
