However, Gabriel quickly equalised for Arsenal, just moments after Diogo Dalot was sent off following his second yellow card of the evening.

Martin Odegaard then failed to convert a controversial penalty, and Kai Havertz squandered at least two golden opportunities to give Arsenal the lead.

Despite being down to 10 men, United held firm against Arsenal, forcing the game into a penalty shootout.

Bayindir made a magnificent save against Havertz, helping United progress ahead in the competition.

Player Ratings

Altay Bayindir – 8/10

Amorim backed Bayindir between the sticks and he disappointed with his ball distribution.

His weak clearance allowed the Gunners to equalise.

He redeemed himself to a certain level by making a stunning save to deny Odegaard from the spot. He made a few more fantastic saves late in the game.

Bayindir turned the night for United when he obstructed another penalty in the shootout.

Noussair Mazraoui – 8/10

It was an adventurous game for the defender, who began and finished the match as a right wing-back, yet played a significant portion of the game on the opposite side.

He showcased quality and composure, taking on his responsibilities with excellence from start to finish.

Matthijs de Ligt – 9/10

De Ligt put in a heroic shift, including his block to deny Declan Rice a certain goal in the extra time.

His clearance to obstruct Trossard was extraordinary.

Harry Maguire – 9/10

Maguire stood as a rock in the centre. He was penalized for a foul he didn’t commit.

The United supporters gave him a big applause when he came off.

Lisandro Martinez – 8/10

Martinez was not the only player who was wrongly booked.

Like Maguire and De Ligt, Martinez played a robust role at the back.

Diogo Dalot – 1/10

Dalot made the rash decision to attempt a sliding challenge while already on a yellow card, a moment of pure recklessness from the Portuguese ace.

Manuel Ugarte – 7/10

Ugarte has undoubtedly become the vital cog in United’s midfield.

Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10

He was the first United player to test David Raya but his tame effort was never going to beat the shot-stopper.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10

Garnacho earned a rare start and impressed with his choice to find Fernandes for his goal rather than taking a shot himself.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10

The Portuguese star produced a brilliant finish, making it look effortlessly simple, as he gave United a surprising lead.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4/10

As anticipated, Hojlund endured a challenging evening against the formidable Arsenal’s centre-backs.

Substitutions

Amad Diallo – 6/10

Diallo filled as a right-back and put in a decent shift. He moved to a more advanced position in the extra time and could have bagged an assist.

Joshua Zirkzee – 8/10

The Dutch forward delivered a fine cameo, using his physicality effectively to bring other United players into the game.

He drew a crucial save from Raya late in the game.

Zirkzee has endured a tough start to his United career but he held his nerves to take his side home with the finally penalty kick.

Toby Collyer – 7/10

Collyer made his first of possibly many appearances under Amorim. He helped defensively and in attack during transitions.

Tyrell Malacia – 6/10

A good effort to keep Raheem sterling in check.

Leny Yoro – 6/10

Yoro was solid in defence and composed with his penalty.
