Jesse Lingard back in training as Luke Shaw begins rehab from injury

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester Evening News) before the Premier League encounter against Southampton this weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave an update on midfielder Jesse Lingard, who has been on the sidelines for more than a month.

He also gave an update on the recovery status of defenders Luke Shaw and Phil Jones from injury.

Premier League clubs continue to battle with injury problems, but United will be boosted by Jesse Lingard’s return to the squad. Phil Jones, however, remains out until December while left-back Luke Shaw has started his rehab from injury.

The 27-year-old midfielder had been out on the sidelines through an unspecified injury he suffered in early October. He returned to fitness before the most recent international break but had to enter self-isolation after coming into contact with a Covid-19 positive individual. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Solskjaer confirmed Lingard’s return in the press conference by saying that the Englishman is back training with the group.

“Luke [Shaw] has just started his rehab, out on the grass, not out with the team yet. Jesse’s [Lingard] back from his isolation period, so he had a couple of days training with the group. Apart from that, Phil Jones is out until after Christmas sometime.”

Luke Shaw suffered a hamstring injury against Everton in Manchester United’s 3-1 win back in early November but has now started his rehabilitation process away from the first-team squad.

Lingard has been on the fringes of the first-team this season as his two appearances for United have come in Carabao Cup as a substitute. The Englishman is yet to start a game in the league or Europe this campaign but could feature against Southampton this weekend.

Nevertheless, the return of the 27-year-old will be welcome news for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he battles with an ever-increasing injury list at the club.

However, Phil Jones’ injury troubles at the start of the season meant that he is yet to appear for the squad and may only return to action by late December.
