Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona continues to be clouded by uncertainty. The 25-year-old has been a regular in the side since his arrival back in 2019, but there are lingering question marks over the level of his performances so far for Barça.

That, coupled with the club’s poor financial health, have combined to spark speculations about his long-term future at the club. While manager Xavi Hernandez admits that the Dutchman is a key player, he also acknowledges that a sale could be possible if a top offer comes along.

And, Manchester United are waiting in the wings to pounce, with incoming manager Erik ten Hag intent on rejoining forces with de Jong. Indeed, the 52-year-old worked with the Barcelona midfielder at Ajax in the past and is keen on a reunion.

So much so that, as reported by Gerard Romero, ten Hag asks about the Netherlands international ‘every day’ in hope that Manchester United are making progress in his pursuit heading into the summer window.

Ten Hag is believed to be in contact with de Jong as well as he hopes to convince the midfielder to jump ship in the summer.

However, de Jong, for his part, does not wish to leave Barcelona in the summer. The former Feyenoord and Ajax starlet is keen on achieving success at Camp Nou and wants to stay put in Catalonia.

That, however, might not be possible as Romero adds that Barcelona and Manchester United are looking for ways to complete the deal soon. As iterated earlier, the Blaugrana need to make a big sale in the coming weeks, while the Red Devils need a replacement for Paul Pogba.

Barça are demanding a sum of around €85 million for the midfielder, which should not be an issue for Manchester United.

However, de Jong’s unwillingness to leave, coupled with their inability to offer Champions League football next season, could become major hurdles in the chase. So, it remains to be seen how this story unfolds in the coming weeks.
