Manchester United are certain to want a new striker this summer.

Following Edinson Cavani’s recent departure, the Red Devils now have 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo as their only outright striker.

Speaking earlier in the year about the club’s need to sign a younger forward, former interim boss Ralf Rangnick admitted it was ‘obvious’.

“This is obvious,” Rangnick told reporters in February, as quoted by ESPN.

“Edison’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.”

With Rangnick now making way for new permanent boss Erik Ten Hag, the former Ajax manager is set to oversee a major rebuild and fans will be hoping one of the Dutchman’s first big signings comes in the form of a new hitman.

One player who the Red Devils are believed to be keen on is Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old South American has enjoyed a successful breakthrough and is a strong candidate to move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs this summer.

Speaking about the possibility of United winning the race for the Uruguayan’s signature, journalist Ryan Taylor, who spoke to GiveMeSport, said: “I do sort of question where United’s priorities lie; it’s probably a striker to help Ronaldo.

“So, Darwin Nunez, I know he’s a player definitely that United like, and they’ve initiated contact with Benfica and his agent to sort of gauge what kind of price tag would be enough to get him.”

Since joining Benfica from UD Almeria back in 2020, Nunez, who has three years left on his deal, has gone on to feature in 84, scoring 47 goals and adding a further 16 assists along the way.
