Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United are still in talks with Jesse Lingard over extending his contract at the club.

What did Romano say about Lingard potentially staying at Man United?

Earlier this month, it was reported that Lingard had turned down a new deal at Old Trafford, and with less than a year remaining on his current contract it appeared that his days at United were numbered.

However, while Romano has confirmed that the 28-year-old did reject the club's initial offer, he has claimed that both parties are still discussing the possibility of Lingard extending his stay.

Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Romano said: “Let me mention Jesse Lingard because he was scoring a key goal for Man United with West Ham, and at the moment the feeling is that he has chances to extend the contract. It’s not agreed yet because the opening proposal was turned down and was not accepted, but they are still negotiating, United and Lingard’s side with his father – Mino Raiola is no longer his agent – so with his father. And let’s see if they’ll be able to find a way but I think now the atmosphere around Lingard is really positive.

“West Ham wanted him back in the summer, but there was no agreement with United, and also AC Milan wanted him in June as a potential Calhanoglu replacement, but now everything is calm around Lingard and they will discuss on his contract.”

How has Lingard started this season?

As Romano mentioned, Lingard made a major impact off the bench on Sunday when he netted the winner against his former club West Ham in the Premier League. That is not his only goal of the campaign either, as he also found the net in United's 4-1 triumph over Newcastle earlier this month.

It has not been a completely straightforward start to the season for Lingard, though. The attacking midfielder, who is valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, has not started any of his side's first five league matches, and failed to even feature in two of them. Furthermore, he also made a costly error in the Champions League last week, when he under-hit his backpass to David de Gea, which allowed Theoson Siebatcheu to pounce and hand Young Boys an unlikely 2-1 victory.

Should Lingard put pen to paper on a new deal at Man United?

This promises to be a tough decision for Lingard given that he came through the ranks at United as a youngster, meaning that he has a deep connection with the club.

Who was the most expensive Manchester United signing of 2021?

Jadon Sancho Cristiano Ronaldo Tom Heaton Raphael Varane

Still, he showed last season at West Ham that he is good enough to be a regular starter in the Premier League, and it seems that he is unlikely to get that opportunity in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho this summer.

If he is content with cameo appearances in the league, and the odd start in cup competitions then he may want to stay at United. However, if he is keen to play consistently and cement his place in England's World Cup squad next year, it may be time for him to move on in 2022.
