Manchester United keeping tabs on Juventus starlet Cristian Romero

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are keeping tabs on Juventus’ Argentine star Cristian Romero.

The 23-year-old is in fact currently on loan at Atalanta this season. He has so far made 39 appearances for them, scoring three goals and assisting five. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Romero is among a number of players on United’s radar as they look to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window. Others on the list include Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

Atalanta’s loan agreement for Romero has an obligation for them to make the deal permanent for around £21.5m. Thankfully for United, the Italians are ready to sell him again for around £34m.

Given what Sevilla want for Kounde, it is clear that Romero represents a much better option economically. However, it can be argued that the Frenchman is a better overall player than Romero at this point in time.

Capable of also playing at right-back, Romero is versatile enough to do a job for the Red Devils at the back. At 23, he is still about to enter his prime and could very well develop into a better player at Old Trafford.

With Edinson Cavani’s future secured, United are unlikely to go big on another striker. The same cannot be said of the other end with a defender considered to be a priority.

Harry Maguire is the club’s lone automatic choice at centre-back. While we do have numbers in Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe, neither of them have been able to impress on a consistent basis. Whether Romero will be the man to do that remains to be seen.

The 23-year-old has been capped by Argentina at the youth levels. He has represented his country at both the Under-20 and Under-23 levels but is yet to win a senior cap.
