Manchester United are reportedly tracking Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret who is currently running on an expiring contract.
The Red Devils currently have a clear hierarchy between the sticks, as Andre Onana is the undisputed Number One at the club, with Altay Bayindir serving as his understudy, and the experienced Tom Heaton as a third goalkeeper.
However, many consider the Turk to be too good for a second choice. This season, he has only featured in the Carabao Cup thus far, so he’s being tipped to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season in search of a playing role that suits his capabilities.
Therefore, the Premier League giants could need a new custodian for next season, and Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg claims they’re following Napoli’s Meret.
The 27-year-old started his career at his hometown club Udinese before joining the southern Italian giants in the summer of 2018. The Italy international has long cemented himself as the club’s Number One, and he played an instrumental role during the glorious Scudetto-winning campaign in 2022/23 under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti.

This season, Meret has registered seven clean sheets in 11 Serie A appearances thus far, conceding eight goals in the process. However, his future at the Mardona Stadium remains clouded with mystery as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and the two parties have yet to make progress in their renewal talks.
Plettenberg reveals that the Red Devils aren’t the only ones tracking the Italian shot-stopper, as Inter Milan are also monitoring the situation.
This wouldn’t be the first time Man United sign a goalkeeper from Serie A, having already acquired Onana from Inter in the summer of 2023.
