Manchester United to up the ante against the Glazers by boycotting club sponsors

According to Sky Sports, club sponsors are now in the firing line as Manchester United fans up the ante in their protest against the Glazers.

Supporters came out in defiance against the American owners last month following the club’s participation in the now-defunct European Super League.

That has since snowballed into a bigger movement focussed against the owners. The Glazers haven’t been the most popular of custodians since taking over in 2005 and the fans are seeking a change in the ownership of the club.

United are one of the wealthiest financial institutions in the sport and it is no secret that the Glazers are sitting on a cash cow. By targetting commercial sponsors, fans are hoping to strike the owners where it hurts – their purse strings.

The movement has been garnering support on Twitter under the hashtag ‘notapennymore’. Numerous fans came out in support of it and vowed to join in.

The club’s Supporters Trust (MUST), revealed in an open letter to Joel Glazer that brands associated with the Glazers’ parasitic relationship with the club will be boycotted.

Under the Americans, United’s net debt has grown to £455.5million. Much of it is leveraged against the club itself. There are also concerns about the state of the stadium, as well as the lack of investment in the squad. (h/t The Mirror)

United’s soon to be sponsors, Team Viewer, have been subject to much negative publicity by fans. They have of late received a number of negative reviews on TrustPilot, thanks to their association with the club.

The German tech giants were announced as the new front-of-shirt sponsor earlier this year, agreeing to a £235m deal.
