Manchester United strike in injury time to take the title to the last day

Scorers: Ladd 2′, Garcia 90+1′, Angeldahl 68′

With just two minutes on the clock, Hayley Ladd opened the scoring for United in the derby with a quite brilliant strike from the edge of the box.

United remained on top for much of the opening 20 minutes, with Leah Galton coming the closest to scoring a second. She headed just over from an excellent Katie Zelem cross.

City came right back into the contest with two chances just before the half-hour mark, Chloe Kelly hitting the post and Filippa Angeldahl’s effort being blocked by United’s Hannah Blundell inside the box.

City’s attempts to get back into the game suffered a huge blow in the 42nd minute when Ellie Roebuck was sent off for a challenge on Nikita Parris. The England forward was put through by Ella Toone and won the race against the City keeper, who then took her out.

Despite being a man down, City started the second half strongly but failed to score. United needed a second before they could relax.

United’s failure to add to their lead cost them in the 68th minute when Filippa Angeldahl’s cross looped into the net over a back-pedalling Mary Earps. Game on.

Lucia Garcia grabbed what surely was the winner for United in the 91st minute, smashing the ball home after some penalty box pinball.

United held out to secure a massive win and keep their title dreams alive.

Chelsea put one hand on championship

Scorers: Reiten 22′, Eriksson 41′

Chelsea overcame Arsenal at home on Sunday afternoon to move to the verge of a fourth straight Women’s Super League title.

The game began at frantic pace and Stina Blackstenius came close to the opener, only for Ann-Katrin Berger to deny her with a good save and two minutes later, her side pounced in ruthless fashion at the other end.

Guro Reiten grabbed the goal when she slid in at the back post to steer a cross-field pass into the far corner and things got even better shortly before half-time when the departing Magda Eriksson popped up with a huge insurance strike.

After six years, on her final appearance at Kingsmeadow, she turned in at close range after the ball was flicked into her path inside the six-yard box to spark wild celebrations.

However, Jonas Eidevall’s charges responded well after the break and came close to reducing the deficit quickly, only for the crossbar to deny Caitlin Foord before they were offered an even bigger chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

But Katie McCabe fluffed her lines from 12 yards, dragging her miscued effort wide of the mark and after missing that golden opportunity, it was as close as the Gunners came.

The result means that if Manchester United fail to beat Manchester City in their derby on Sunday night then the title will remain with the Blues.
